24 Hour Readathon

A quick shout to say I'm taking part in Dewey's Readathon this year on the 22nd October. That's 24 hours straight of reading!

Of course, I'd do it just for the fun of it but I'd also like to support a charity, for a cause that maybe doesn't get as much airtime as some others: Alzheimer's Society.

Alzheimer's or senile dementia is often forgotten about as "something that happens to old people". We're doing such a good job of treating cancer and heart disease that there's a much bigger chance of us getting old these days. So it's something you should care about. It's frustrating enough when you can't remember a word or a name, what would it be like to not remember what happened today? Imagine not being able to read a book any more because you can't remember starting it. Alzheimer's is such a heartbreaking disease for all concerned.

Many of you will know that Sir Terry Pratchett has a rare form of Alzheimer's and has brought it into the light a little. Each new book we get is such a treasure and he has such a positive outlook. I'll be reading his latest as part of the readathon (if I can wait that long).

I know you're all thinking, oh no, not someone else wanting money. If you can't sponsor me, how about considering donating some books to a charity shop that supports the elderly or mental health. Maybe next time you think about doing something for charity you can consider raising money for the Alzeimer's Society, who both fund research and care for sufferers.

If you'd like to sponsor me, you can do so securely through Just Giving. Any amount is gratefully received by the charity however I'd love it if you would pledge a Penny Per Page. Basically, for every page I read during the readathon you will donate 1p. If you'd like to pledge, please leave a comment and you will be informed after the readathon on the total. I promise not to cheat!

  1. Are you staying awake and reading the whole 24 hours? This is a brilliant idea, have sponsored you, sorry it isn't much but every little helps

  3. Stick me down for the penny per page. Be kind though, I know how fast you read, please don't take all of my money ;)

  4. Ellie, I am sorry I can't donate (I don't have a card for internet transactions), but I wish you every luck with your readathon! I admire you for supporting such a great cause! :)

Good luck with trying to stay awake for 24 hours. Will be looking forward to any updates you do!

  5. I feel quite bad. I had planned on organising a few friends taking part in this and raising some money. I can't afford to take the time to do it now. So I will happily sponsor you a penny a page.
