AKA Showcase Sunday
I had a lot on the blog last weekend so I skipped Showcase Sunday (no it wasn’t because I broke my book buying ban). I did make it through to payday which was my aim and didn’t throw myself into the Kindle sale in a catastrophic relapse. I did buy a couple of books from The Works though (see, the fact that I didn’t buy three shows progress). They had The Shambling Guide to New York City which was fairly high on my wishlist and despite having a pile of unread Rebecca Chance books already, I have been tempted by reviews to read her latest. Yes, the new one is in The Works.
There’s been a bit of an influx of women’s fiction from Penguin, as well as post addressed to Ellie Warren (chick-lit blogger) which made me laugh. It is also a sign that you shouldn’t worry that publishers are monitoring you carefully. Out of the three, Coco’s Secret has gone onto the definitely will read pile as blurb reminds me a bit of A Vintage Affair.
I was excited to receive a copy of The Vampyre Family which is a non-fiction book about Byron and his friends (including the Shelleys). I already had it on my must-read non-fiction list (yeah, that list that is constantly forgotten, must try harder).
I think I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m a bit bored of generic crime fiction but this week I got a couple of crime books through that sound right up my street. Letters From a Murderer is a based on the premise that Jack the Ripper fled to New York to continue his crimes. I have been receiving mysterious postcards for the Game trilogy the last couple of weeks and finally one of the books turned up; they sound really dark and interesting plus I think the whole trilogy is being published in one go, which is always a bonus if you get sucked in.
There may have also been some over-excited NetGalley clicking. I’m still sticking around the 80% feedback mark so it’s allowed. Honest!
The Vampyre Family by Andrew McConnell Stott (Canongate)
Game by Anders de la Motte (Blue Door)
Monsieur le Commandant by Romain Slocombe (Gallic Books)
Letters From a Murderer by John Matthews (Exhibit A)
Seven For a Secret by Lyndsay Faye (Headline)
Coco’s Secret by Niamh Greene (Penguin)
Tempting Fate by Jane Green (Penguin)
The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty (Penguin)
All is Fair by Emma Newman (Angry Robot)
Tainted by A.E. Rought (Strange Chemistry)
Tempt the Stars by Karen Chance (Signet)
Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan (HarperCollins)
Bought:
The Shambling Guide to New York City by Mur Lafferty
Killer Queens by Rebecca Chance
Showcase Sunday is hosted by Books, Biscuits & Tea.

Ooh, the Vampyre Family sounds really interesting, enjoy!
Ha, from your blog I can immediately tell that you're a chick-lit blogger! It's so pink and fluffy. Your new books look really good though, hope you enjoy them
I think you are doing really well with not buying books, Ellie! Two is nothing :))) I'm just glad that I only buy for a kindle right now and only if the book is really cheap and on my wishlist, otherwise I'll be in big trouble! Hope we both like Letters from a Murderer!
Awesome haul! I had Boy Meets Boy for a while and I look forward to starting it.
Happy reading!
Ooh, Tempting Fate & The Husband's Secret both sound really good! Game sounds like it'll be good too!
Great haul! Happy reading 🙂
Letters from a Murderer sounds really good. I read Boy Meets Boy a while ago, it was a fun read – hope you enjoy it!
Wow, only 2 books at The Works? That's pretty good restraint! 🙂 I've heard lots about The Shambling Guide, so looking forward to reading that myself. And 4 NetGalley books isn't bad! I'm trying to control the clicking at the moment too… can be very hard! ^^
Enjoy these and have a great week!
I admit it made me giggle when you posted that picture up on twitter that said "Ellie – chick lit blogger"
I can thoroughly recommend the new Rebecca Chance – I really hope you enjoy it 🙂
I'm also very proud of you for your restraint in The Works with only buying two! I can't say the same for me, I may go out and buy some books this afternoon…it's just that I have some money and I sometimes feel that these books are just calling me to buy them….gosh I need help!
Have a lovely Sunday Ellie 🙂

Your so lucky! I wish publishers would send me books :P. Enjoy them!
The Works has the Shambling Guide…? Right, I know where I need to stop tomorrow! Ellie, you aren't helping me cut down on book buying!! 🙂
Otherwise I have to admit you're doing very well on your Netgalley reading – I've been trying to slow down in my requests so I can get all of those I've got read…still have 12 to go through!
*Quietly adds The Vampyre Family straight onto the top end of her wishlist* One of the first books I ever read about Byron was a fiction novel called The Vampyre, by Tom Holland, with the premise that Byron had BECOME A VAMPIRE during his travels overseas, and that his friend Polidori was the only one who knew the truth. All very exciting… 🙂
Boy Meets Boy is already at the top of Mount TBR (by which I mean, it's in the top box I'm taking with me. THE TOP BOX!) but I think it's hitting its 10th anniversary this year? Which makes me feel like a little old lady, but NEVER MIND. 😀
I have heard very good things about Coco's Secret if that helps at all. 🙂
Now that's a good week. Well done on only buying two books. They had a copy of The Vintage Affair in the library for sale. Should I have nabbed that one? Is it worth it?
If it's the one by Isabel Wolfe I loved it.
Who can resist The Works? They have such good deals in there, so well done on the restraint you showed in only buying a couple.
Sarah
Good luck in reading all those books, looks like you've gotten a few 🙂 though well done on only buying 2, if i go into a bookstore i don't even want to think about how many book's i might buy 🙂
I wish they had The Works here in Ireland!! Great haul 🙂
I must read The Vampyre Family, I love the whole story of making up ghost stories while it rained in Geneva.
Not buying/requesting books is hard, right? I feel you haha. "Letters of a murderer" sounds interesting. I'm looking forward to your reviews!
A bookseller in London recommended "The Shambling Guide" to me based on the Firefly T-Shirt I was wearing. ("If you're a Joss Whedon fan, you might like this.") She had impeccable taste and it is so much fun. It reminded me of Jasper Fforde crossed with Discworld. I hope you enjoy it.
Bahaha, you the chick-lit blogger. 🙂 Thanks for letting us know about Letters From a Murderer – I love this whole Jack the Ripper myth so it might have to go on my wishlist.
I've been thinking about requesting a copy of The Husband's Secret but decided against it – I think I'll wait for a few reviews first.
I've heard some good things about The Husband's Secret, and the cover for All is Fair looks lovely. I hope you enjoy your books!
