Books by Numbers

Jumping on the bandwagon after the Other Ellie did this meme that Jess Hearts Books started. My bookcases are in complete disarray but I chose to do this on the two slightly more tidy ones (which comes out at around 350 books). Each book is chosen by a random number generator and a question answered. This can be a bit tricky when you haven't read half your books.

It's really just an excuse for a bookcase tour/book porn post.

Q1.) Have you read this book? If so what did you think of it?
11: Mystery of Mercy Close by Marian Keyes

Um, nope. Great start, Ellie. Although here you get to see a shot of my shelf for books with girlie covers which may or may not be chick-lit.

Q2.) Why did you buy this book? Were you recommended it? Was it a random purchase?
89: More Than This by Patrick Ness

I bought it in Waterstones in Bournemouth on the launch day of the Books Are My Bag campaign (even though they weren't taking part). I wanted to buy something, I had heard good things and I loved the cover design (enough that I knew I wouldn't wait for the paperback). So sort of random. I sort of missed a trick by not featuring one of my bookworms in the doorway :(

Q3.) Based on what you know about this book which other book blogger would you recommend it to?
29: Devil's Bargain by Rachel Caine

Ooh tough one... I know it looks like a Morganville Vampire book (in which case, Hannah!) but it doesn't have any vampires in. It's more of a thriller with a supernatural twist, soooo, maybe Leah. Yes, there's one of my bookworms, I have trained them not to eat the books.

Q4.) Who’s this books bookshelf neighbour?
44: Death's Mistress by Karen Chance

You can tell my lack of order, it's not near the other books in the series yet (I have them). Instead it is hanging out with The Crane Wife by Patrick Ness and Some Quiet Place by Kelsey Sutton (which I got in the last Ninja Book Swap and still haven't read).

Q5.) How many books have you read by this book’s author?
60: Two Weeks' Notice by Rachel Caine

I'm happy this landed on someone I have not only read, but read lots of. According to Goodreads, I have read 13 of hers across Morganville, Weather Warden and Red Letter series. Shortly after taking this photo I very nearly had a book avalanche catastrophy. Only stack your books like this if you really need to!

Q6.) Do you have any special memories attached to this book?
130: The Siege Ishmail Kadare

Not really, it was part of a bargain The Book People set though! It probably arrived in a lovely read box that brought much joy.

Q7.) Is this book part of a series? If it is are you up to date with the series?
21: Playing Tyler by TL Costa

I don't think it is (either way, not up-to-date as I haven't read this one yet). I don't know much about it to be honest. It's probably got some war in it, what with the helicopter and the poppies. And it must be SFF as it's from Strange Chemistry.

Q8.) Is this book something you’d typically read or is it out of your comfort zone?
103: The Haunted Book by Jeremy Dyson

I read quite widely so my comfort zone is huge but this is sort of horror, which I don't read much of (I am a huge wimp). There are some quite scary bits in it.

Q9.) Have you reviewed this book? If yes then share a link to it.
64: Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison

No, but you can have a link to the first book in the series (and yes, I am giving it a second chance).

Q10.) Where did you buy this book from?
123: The Silent Wife by A.S.A Harrison

Didn't buy, no I didn't steal it, what kind of person do you take me for? It was an unsolicited review copy from Headline.

Q11.) Roughly how long have you owned this book for?
61: Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger

Let me just check my records... Purchased week ending 9th June 2013, from the holy place that is The Works.

Q12.) Share the first sentence of this book.
202: Zombies vs. Unicorns

Since the dawn of time one question has dominated all others: Zombies or Unicorns?

Q13.) What’s your opinion on this book’s cover?
258: The Ancient Guide to Modern Life

It's probably not something that would leap out at me but it suits the book (I think, I haven't read it yet). If it's not about Roman life, I'm in trouble. You can just see my book jar in this photo which I started and momentously failed to use.

Q14.) In a few sentences describe this book in your own words.
188: The Virgin Cure

Um, OK, I haven't read this one. I think it's something to do with Victorian brothels. Has that sold it to you?

  1. Ooooh ellie I love the book pictures, you should do more like this! I don't know any of the ones you have picked out. I thought maybe I had read zombies and unicorns but I can't find any evidence of it.

  2. I love seeing other peoples shelves, so I'm glad to see you counting your books ;)

The Virgin Cure is very good if you like historical fiction.

Watch out for book avalanches! ;-)

  3. Loved the tour through your bookshelves ... and honestly, I wouldn't have fared much better on the "Have I read that one yet?" waggon!

  4. YAAAAAAY BOOK PORN! Nah, most of the books on my bookshelf were unread too, which is why they were ON THE BOOKSHELF IN THE FIRST PLACE. I remade my book jar this week and am now ACTUALLY USING IT, which is fun. I spotted 'Something of the Night' there on the Q10 photo, I just got that one out the library! Oooh, and The Song of Achilles! AND A LION CALLED CHRISTIAN! That modern guide thingy looks cool, you should totally read/review that so I know whether to buy it. Also, I don't know why I haven't got Zombies vs Unicorns because OH MY GOD WHAT A TITLE. And that Patrick Ness book is gorgeous. Aaaaaand those bookworms are half amazing, half a bit creepy, half cute. YES THAT IS THREE HALVES SHUT UP I HATE MATHS.

Don't you just love it when I drop by with a really concise, pithy comment that makes perfect sense? :P

  6. Yay! Thanks for taking part. I loved reading your post ( and getting a sneaky peak at your bookshelves. THIS IS WHY I CREATED THIS MEME MWAHAHA!) Also I really want one of those cute little bookworms for on my bookcase.
