This is a book of stories about things that happened. With pictures. And dogs.

The lovely Hannah gave me a copy of Hyperbole and a Half for Christmas and I dived right in. If you’ve never read Allie Brosh’s blog, go do so now. If you enjoy what you see, buy this book. I first came across her blog when she wrote her second piece on depression, and the moment it started getting better. Her combination of words and drawings convey perfectly what depression was like for her and it’s recommended reading for anyone struggling to understand a loved one who is suffering. It’s a good starting place at least. Whilst you can read them online, both pieces on depression are included in this book. It includes a mixture of existing and new material

Her drawings might seem slap dash or childlike but they are full of emotion and humour. They manage to communicate everything spot on. She’s just amazing, and funny and moving. The dogs are hilarious. I love that both her dogs are a bit not right and the ensuing drama they cause. It didn’t bother me, but I know some people really dislike white text on a coloured background and there are a few stories that are like that in this colourful and glossy volume.
