Happy New Year folks! My determination to leave my top ten to the actual end of the year hasn’t made much difference as I hardly read anything in December. Oops. This also means I didn’t reach my target but read a healthy 143 books in 2013. The best of which did seem to fall into the first half of the year. So I’m sure there’s no surprises on this list of my favourites*. Go read them all!

#10 The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
#9 Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner
#8 Among Others by Jo Walton
#7 The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
#6 Parasite by Mira Grant
#5 The Glass Republic by Tom Pollock
#4 The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
#3 The Humans by Matt Haig
#2 A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
#1 The Machine by James Smythe
* These are books I’ve read in 2013 and not necessarily newly published last year. This is also based on my enjoyment of the books only and no specific quality criteria.

I read 5 of those titles this year- and am currently reading the Bone Season. Of these my favourite was Among Others- I very much related to the protagonist and I would have been the same age as she was in the time period the story is set,so it felt really personal. A keeper for me…
The Shining Girls is on my list too. 🙂 REALLY need to read Among Others and A Tale for the Time Being. Actually, everything on this list looks so good. Time to extend the TBR list a little more… 😀
Tale for the Time Being is also on my top ten list this year. (should post on Jan 2) I've got The 5th Wave on my radar but I've not read it yet.
Hi, just to point out your link to The Machine is going to the image not the review.
Thanks for letting me know, fixed now!
The Shining Girls is in my top 5 too! I also really enjoyed The 5th Wave when I really didn't think I would 🙂 I have a couple of these on my TBR pile for 2014 …
Happy new year Ellie. I am reading The Humans at the moment, and remember your fab review of this one. Thanks for hosting the translation challenge last year.
Well, I have four of these already sitting on Mount TBR and at least another one on my library list, so it looks like I'm in for some great reading. Also, is it you who's read Pascal Garnier? I saw a couple of his books in the library yesterday and for some reason you flashed into my mind. I got one out, so hopefully it'll be an interesting little read! 🙂
Yup, that was me. Really liked The Panda Theory, The A26 (I think, anyway the one with the road as a title) wasn't so good.
Looks like a great year of reading. Among Others is a personal favorite. Read it when it first came out then turned right around read it aloud to my wife, who also loved it. I'm really excited for her essay collection due out later this month.
I've read many good things about 5th Wave and it is the kind of book my wife would love, so I may need to get her that for Valentine's Day or her upcoming birthday.
I have on my tbr The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes- I really want to read the humans by Matt Haig. Happy New Year
