Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
I am still trying to finish off my reading challenges (Popsugar and ATY) so I’m not sure how many of these I’ll get round too this autumn, because of course most don’t align with the outstanding prompts I have left. Oh well, it’s fun making lists, right?
*Indicates I received a review copy.
The Red Scholar’s Wake by Aliette de Bodard*
Xรญch Si: bot maker, data analyst, mother, scavenger. But those days are over now-her ship has just been captured by the Red Banner pirate fleet, famous for their double-dealing and cruelty. Xรญch Si expects to be tortured to death-only for the pirates’ enigmatic leader, Rice Fish, to arrive with a different and shocking proposition: an arranged marriage between Xรญch Si and herself.
Rice Fish: sentient ship, leader of the infamous Red Banner pirate fleet, wife of the Red Scholar. Or at least, she was the latter before her wife died under suspicious circumstances. Now isolated and alone, Rice Fish wants Xรญch Si’s help to find out who struck against them and why. Marrying Xรญch Si means Rice Fish can offer Xรญch Si protection, in exchange for Xรญch Si’s technical fluency: a business arrangement with nothing more to it.
But as the investigation goes on, Rice Fish and Xรญch Si find themselves falling for each other. As the interstellar war against piracy intensifies and the five fleets start fighting each other, they will have to make a stand-and to decide what kind of future they have together…
A Restless Truth by Freya Marske*
Magic! Murder! Shipboard romance!
Maud Blyth has always longed for adventure. She expected plenty of it when she volunteered to serve as an old lady’s companion on an ocean liner, in order to help her beloved older brother unravel a magical conspiracy that began generations ago.
What she didn’t expect was for the old lady in question to turn up dead on the first day of the voyage. Now she has to deal with a dead body, a disrespectful parrot, and the lovely, dangerously outrageous Violet Debenham, who’s also returning home to England. Violet is everything that Maud has been trained to distrust yet can’t help but desire: a magician, an actress, and a magnet for scandal.
Surrounded by the open sea and a ship full of suspects, Maud and Violet must first drop the masks that they’ve both learned to wear before they can unmask a murderer and somehow get their hands on a magical object worth killing for–without ending up dead in the water themselves.
Saga Volume 10 by Brian K. Vaughan + Fiona Staples
At long last, Hazel and her star-crossed family are finally back, and theyโve made some new…friends?
The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out – not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way.
But that impossible dream has somehow come true for El and her classmates. And what’s more, she didn’t even have to become the monstrous dark witch she’s prophesised to become to make it happen. Instead of killing enclavers, she saved them, and now the world is safe for all wizards. Peace and harmony have enveloped all the enclaves of the world.
Just kidding.
Instead, someone else has picked up the project of destroying enclaves in El’s stead, and everyone she saved is at risk again with a full-scale enclave war on the horizon. And so, the first thing El needs to do after miraculously escaping the Scholomance, is to turn straight around and find a way back in.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania.
What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.
Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.
The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal
Tesla Crane, a brilliant inventor and an heiress, is on her honeymoon on an interplanetary space liner, cruising between the Moon and Mars. She’s travelling incognito and is reveling in her anonymity. Then someone is murdered and the festering chowderheads who run security have the audacity to arrest her spouse.
Armed with banter, martinis and her small service dog, Tesla is determined to solve the crime so that the newlyweds can get back to canoodling and keep the real killer from striking again.
Loki by Melvin Burgess*
Born within the heart of a fire in the hollow of a tree-trunk, Loki arrives in Asgard as an outsider. He is a trickster, an unreliable narrator, the god of intelligence and politics. In spite of his cleverness and sparkling wit (or, perhaps, because of this…) Loki struggles to find his place among the old patriarchal gods of supernatural power and is constantly at odds with the god of thunder – Thor.
Alongside the politics of Asgard, it charts the course of Loki’s many loves and families, from his mothering of Odin’s famous horse to his intense, turbulent, and, eventually, fatal relationship with Baldr the Beautiful – a tender and moving story of love that goes wrong, jealousy and a transitioning that is forbidden by society.
The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean
Hidden across England and Scotland live six old Book Eater families.
The last of their lines, they exist on the fringes of society and subsist on a diet of stories and legends.
Children are rare and their numbers have dwindled, so when Devon Fairweatherโs second child is born a dreaded Mind Eater โ a perversion of her own kind, who consumes not stories but the minds and souls of humans โ she flees before he can be turned into a weapon for the familyโฆ or worse.
Living among humans and finding prey for her son, Devon seeks a cure for his hunger. But time is running out โ for her family want her back, and with every soul her son consumes he loses a little more of himselfโฆ
This is a story of escape, a motherโs savage devotion and a queer love that will electrify readers looking for something beguiling, thrilling, strange and new.
Wolf Pack by Will Dean
Aย closed community

A missing person

A frantic search
As Tuva attempts to unmask the culprit, she gains unique access to the residents. But soon she finds herself in danger of the pack turning against her โ will she make her way back to safety so she can expose the truth?
Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes by Rob Wilkins
Before his untimely death, Terry was writing a memoir: the story of a boy who aged six was told by his teacher that he would never amount to anything and spent the rest of his life proving him wrong. For Terry lived a life full of astonishing achievements: becoming one of the UK’s bestselling and most beloved writers, winning the prestigious Carnegie Medal and being awarded a knighthood.
Now, the book Terry sadly couldn’t finish has been written by Rob Wilkins, his former assistant, friend and now head of the Pratchett literary estate. Drawing on his own extensive memories, along with those of the author’s family, friends and colleagues, Rob unveils the full picture of Terry’s life – from childhood to his astonishing writing career, and how he met and coped with what he called the ‘Embuggerance’ of Alzheimer’s disease.
A deeply moving and personal portrait of the extraordinary life of Sir Terry Pratchett, written with unparalleled insight and filled with funny anecdotes, this is the only official biography of one of our finest authors.

I’ve not read any T. Kingfisher before but this seemed like a perfect autumn read.
Wow this all looks amazing! Also I just want to say the design of your blog is so beautiful I love it! Adding The Spare Man to be my TBR!
Thank you!
I have fallen so behind on the Saga series. I need to get caught up.
After the ending of volume 9, it will probably be nice to be able to pick the next one up straight away. I’ve been waiting so long!
Neither A Restless Truth or The Book Eaters were on my list this week, but they’re both books I want to read.

Great list! I cannot wait for Saga!!! I pre-ordered that so fast. haha. I know, I have about 11 Popsugar books left and they are the hardest prompts to fit into my TBR or ARCs. I really want to finish it this year because I’m so close but I don’t know that I can do it.
Popsugar has been tough this year! I still have to pick a duology, there’s so much pressure that I have to like the first book enough to read the second straight away.
Yes! Omg.. it’s so hard because there are several more books than usual. There’s two duologies and then the two sister city prompts. Sheesh! I did These Violent Delights for one duology and really enjoyed both of them a lot!
I need to read volume 10 of Saga. Love that series. What Moves the Dead is on my wish list.

This is my first time seeing this cover for What Moves the Dead. It’s stunning. Hope you enjoy all these!
A Restless Truth and What Moves the Dead need to go on my TBR immediately! I’ve really enjoyed both authors previous books.
I think I just found a present idea for my husband! Terry Pratchett is his favorite author, and I think he would love to learn more about the man behind Discworld!

Depending on your budget there are a few fancy editions of it too.
Wow, these sound really good! I hope you enjoy your fall reading!
PS What Moves the Dead is amazing!
So many great books on your TBR. I’m definitely putting LOKI on mine. I love that character so much. And, wow, the cover for The Red Schoar’s Wake is gorgeous! I hope you enjoy all of these!
I’m trying to finish up the PopSugar challenge, too. I still have 14 prompts to go, so who knows if I’ll actually make it?? Good luck to you on your challenges!
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

The end table where I keep my TBR books is overflowing. I empty it out on New Years Day, but may not be able to wait until then this year. I fall behind in my reading and keep buying more books. Oh, well…
I have seen The Book Eaters and it does draw my attention for sure. The Spare Man draws my attention only for the Wheaton Terrier (am I right here?) on the cover!
Thanks for visiting us yesterday, I hope you will have a great week!
Wolf Pack looks like something I’d read. Enjoy these!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Good luck with your challenges! I’m hoping to read Saga before the year ends too.
Looks like you’ve got a good range of reads. Enjoy! ๐
How can I resist a book with a title like The Book Eaters?!
Oh wow, that cover for The Red Scholarโs Wake is so gorgeous! Hope you’ll enjoy all of these!
I’ve seen lots of people rave about Naomi’s books and say they’re really good. But haven’t read anything by the author. All I know about the books too, makes it seem like great autumn reads. ๐ Thanks so much for visiting my website on this week. Apologies for the delay in visiting here.
I hope all of these are great reads for you. I really enjoyed The Book Eaters. Such a unique story.
